Nice safe:)
Fits under the seat of my car for when I can't carry (banks, libraries, hospitals, etc. Safe enough for a smash and grab, keeps my insurance and registration away from the potential dishonest valet or other people who occasionally have access. Safe works well, easy to program, buttons seem consistent, dunno what others were unhappy about... Maybe the problems have been fixed? Oh yeah, WHAT Smell? Minor peeve... The guy who translated the Chinese to English needs a little help...
MV500-STD Pistol Safe Perfect for Vehicle Storage!!
I purchased the MV500 so that I could safely and securely store my weapons in my SUV (no trunk) when I will be entering a building where Concealed Carry is prohibited. The center console, or underneath the seat is not considered secure storage under state law. You have a big legal/liability problem if your weapon is stolen from your vehicle because you were negligent and it was not properly secured. The MV500 is also great to secure valuables (Radar detector, GPS, etc) when you Valet park. The MV500-STD easily fits a 1911 .45 ACP, a widescreen Garmin GPS, and a Radar Valentine Detector. The unit is very easy to open with one hand using the combination lock, and has a backup key lock if the battery dies. To secure valuables, you simply wrap/loop the included steel cable around a front seat attach point, and slide the cable end into the cutout on the side of the safe. When you close the lid, the safe is secured to the fixed point on the vehicle. The cable could be cut with large bolt cutters and some time, but the chance of smash and grab type thefts is greatly reduced. It's also smart to hide the safe under the seat, or on the floor covered with a jacket, etc. The safe has a great anti-tamper feature that will let you know with a beep, and flashing red LED if an incorrect attempt to open the safe has been made since you locked it. Easily busts curious Casino Valet's! I have used the safe daily for 2 months, and I haven't yet discovered any negative aspects to owning and using it. Completely satisfied at this point! It is TSA approved for Airline travel too.
Product does not open and no Customer support
This is the Second Gunvault product we bought and will have to return.
The first was the MVB500 Microvault Biometric Pistol Gun Safe.
We had to return it because it never read our biometric information. So we decided to replace it with a vault that uses a code, so we bought the MV500. The MV500 was very easy to program, the problem is that it doesn't open when we key in the code. There is a faint click sound, but it stays locked.
I called Gunvualt's Customer service at 1-800 242-1055. But they don't work on Saturdays and Sundays, and only between 8am and 5pm Monday's to Friday (PST). Which is useless because that is also when I'm at work, and I can't call them then.
I left my phone number, so we will see how long it takes them to call me back (they said all their support staff was busy when I called).
So far Gunvault's products are probably the worst I ever bought anything from ever. I don't mind occasional lemon, but when your customer service is also bad. Then I get upset.
It's just not worth buying Gunvault's products, it might work.
And when it doesn't work, then you are on your own.
My advice is: Stay away from Gunvault safes, especially the Biometric safes and the MV500.
Great Value
I have purchased Gun Vaults previously from a variety of places. The Amazon purchase was by far the easiest and the price was very good. Any home with firearms should secure them and if there are children in the home you simply must keep them locked away. This product is great as it allows easy and quick access. Easy to use, good quality product, good price. A safe like this is needed anytime you intend to travel to California with a firearm. I'm in AZ and the gun laws are much more relaxed regarding firearm transport. As soon as you cross into CA, you are required to transport your firearm in a combination safe like this. Always keep any firearm in your house in a gun-vault/ safe especially if you have children.
Perfect for safety and speed
I bought this safe because I wanted to be able to have my gun loaded and ready with quick access, and wanted it to be locked away safe from any unauthorized user (including curious kids). We decided to use a 4 button code on the device, and use it on mute which works well with the led indicator. Like any home defense item practice is key but this safe is sound as can be. I also love the idea of getting a second cable to leave attached to my seat frame in my car for transfer. I highly recommend this safe!
For quick but safe access.
I purchased this because it was a decent pice and I was not concerned about the batteries failing or not being able to open it under pressure etc. It arrived 3 days ago and I am a little skeptical about the reliability of the locking mechanism. For something that is going to be holding a loaded weapon I would expect it to be more secure. For the near future I feel this will keep little hands away from our self defense gun but I will probably invest in something different when my kids get older. My fear is that a 12 year old with a screwdriver could get this open pretty fast. Mine are under a year so I am ok with the product as is for now. AGAIN, the latching mechanism does not seem as well built as the rest of the box. Maybe someone can post a youtube video of someone trying to break into it with a screwdriver and prove its strength but I doubt it would hold up?!?
I think the box is made very well in all other aspects. I don't have a problem opening the box in the dark and the buttons seem fine as long as you press firmly. The comments about the buttons being sketchy seem a little too picky in my opinion.
Great for carrying a weapon or valuables in your vehicle
This is a great little gun "safe." It is pretty well constructed. It is a great choice for carrying a weapon or valuables in your vehicle. I fit my Springfield XD 40 and two magazines in it with no problems. The included security cable is long enough to attach it to most places under a seat or center arm rest/console. It definately won't replace an actual weapon safe as a real theif would have it open in no time, but it will definately deter the average smash and grab theft. The only negative thing I have noticed is that it sometimes won't recognize that you press two buttons at once. You have to push them both really hard in order for it to recognize it. This could be a problem if you use a combination with multiple button presses and need into it in a hurry. Overall, I think this is a great product and have already recommended this product to my friends and family.
On a side note, I think this product would also be great for travelling abroad. It is small enough that you could carry it in your suitcase and have a great way to secure your valuables and or passport/documentation in your hotel room while you're at the beach or somewhere else and don't want to carry everything with you.
Disappointing Safe from GunVault
I am happy with GunVault's 'mini' safe product, and decided to purchase this model as an additional and portable safe to hold my carry pistol. I can't recommend this safe. The buttons are mushy and feel poorly engineered. I have to make entries sometimes twice before the keypad 'reads' them, which effectively eliminates the option of silencing the 'entry accepted' beep that accompanies each successful key press. Not to mention that in a pinch you don't want to be jabbing away repeatedly at a cheap key system because it can't do its (quite simple) job.
Instructions are not particularly necessary for this simple safe, but are terribly written nonetheless. Who vets these things, and who let them out of the 8th grade?
Finally, a flat head screwdriver would make quick work of this little gem I am sure. The locking mechanism gives plenty of play when engaged.
I'm going to keep the safe, because it accomplishes what I bought it for: Non-pressure situation storing and securing of a pistol and extra magazine-- for that extra barrier against unauthorized and curious hands. Had I known what I'd be getting I would have looked elsewhere.
